Although under Islamic rule, Syria and Palestine had mixed Muslim and Christian populations, explaining the use of Christian symbols such as the cross, four pellets, omega, and the palm branch. Very similar round types, except with a loop handle, are found mainly in southern Israel and dated from the late 6th to the end of the 7th century. The conical handle on this type was used in the 7th and 8th centuries.

Spouted cups such as this are called in Persian today shakh-i hajamat ("the horn of the cupper"). They were used in medicine for bloodletting. The cup was placed on the skin and by sucking on the tube the physician would create a vacuum that would pull the blood to the surface. The cup would then be removed and a small incision made to allow the blood to flow.

The earliest glazed lamps were Islamic. Many of the forms were long-lived and continued in use for centuries.

Similar lamps were found in excavations at Mt. Seis near Damascus in Syria.
