Roman Judaea, Pontius Pilate, Prefect under Tiberius, 26 - 36 A.D.

Pontius Pilate is chiefly known for the part he played in the trial and crucifixion of Jesus. He is only known from the New Testament, his coins and a single stone discovered in 1961 inscribed with Pilate's name and "PRAEFECTUS IVDAEAE," which is now in the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. -- Guide to Biblical Coins by David Hendin
