The Buffalo nickel or Indian Head nickel is a popular distinctly American coin type struck by the United States Mint from 1913 to 1938. The designer, James Earl Fraser, modeled the head of the Native American as a composite of three chiefs who had posed for him years earlier: Iron Tail of the Sioux (Custer’s opponent at Little Big Horn), Two Moons of the Cheyenne, and John Big Tree of the Seneca nation. The buffalo (North American bison) used as model was Black Diamond from the New York Central Park Zoo. The placement of the date on a raised area of the design caused it to wear heavily in circulation, creating many "dateless" Buffalo Nickels.SP18190. U.S.A.
