Vietnam, Nguyen Dynasty, Nguyen Phuc Vinh San (Duy Tan), 5 September 1907 - 6 May 1916
|Vietnam|, |Vietnam,| |Nguyen| |Dynasty,| |Nguyen| |Phuc| |Vinh| |San| |(Duy| |Tan),| |5| |September| |1907| |-| |6| |May| |1916|,
After deposing his father and declaring him insane, the French put seven-year old Nguyen Phuc Vinh San on the throne with the reign name Duy Tan ("friend of reform"). They hoped he could be easily influenced and raised to be pro-French. As he grew, he noticed that, although he was the emperor, it was colonial authorities who were actually obeyed. While France was preoccupied with World War I, Duy Tan was smuggled out of the Forbidden City to call upon the people to rise up against the French. After only a few days, he was captured. The rest of the revolutionaries were beheaded. He was deposed and exiled with his father to Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. During World War II he joined the Free French Forces, first as a radio officer on the French destroyer Léopard, then in the Free French army he received successive promotions until he was made a lieutenant-colonel. When France was facing defeat by the Viet Minh, and the regime of Emperor Bao Dai proved incapable of gaining public support, Charles de Gaulle talked to Prince Vinh San, who was still very popular in Vietnam, about returning to Vietnam as Emperor. He died in a plane crash in 1945 on his way home to Vietnam. The hopes of many died with him - as a patriotic challenge to Ho Chi Minh. In 1987, his remains were removed from Africa and brought home to Vietnam to rest in the tomb of his grandfather, Emperor Duc Duc.Duy Tan
