When Qinzong and Huizong were captured by the Jurchen, he established Southern Song Empire. After years of fighting, he signed a treaty with the Jurchens. He did not actually want to defeat them because Qinzong might then be restored to the throne. He was a notable poet with significant influence. Gaozong abdicated after reigning more than 35 years.
