Slaves opened the Salarian Gate and Goths looted the city for three days. St. Jerome, living in Bethlehem at the time, wrote that "The City which had taken the whole world was itself taken." It was the first time since 390 B.C. that Rome had fallen to an enemy and offers a dramatic measure of the decline of the Roman Empire.
