In 521, Justinian, age 39, was appointed consul. He soon became Commander-in-chief of the army of the East and in 527 succeeded Justin I as emperor.

Bronze pentanummium, DOC I 20, SBCV 74, Sommer 2.16, Morrisson BnF 2/Cp/AE/21 ff., Hahn MIB 27, Wroth BMC -, Tolstoi -, Ratto -, gF, both sides about 1/3 off-center, flan casting sprue, small edge cracks, porous, Constantinople (Istanbul, Turkey) mint, weight 2.583g, maximum diameter 14.1mm, die axis 180o, 518 - 522; obverse D N IVSTIN-VS PP AVC, diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust right; reverse large E (mark of value), C/O/N vertical downward on right, officina letter (mostly off flan) far right; this is the first example of this rare type handled by Forum; rare; SOLD
