In 17 A.D. when King Antiochus III of Commagene died, Tiberius annexed Commagene to the province of Syria. According to Josephus, this move was supported by the local nobility but opposed by the mass of the common people; Tacitus, on the other hand, states that "most preferred Roman, but others royal rule."
