A fusion of the Phoenician deities Ba'al and Tanit, Phanebal usually appears wearing a long chiton and helmet, and holds a sword or harpoon and a shield or palm branch. The complex structure of the temple of Phanebal at Ascalon is known from the Roman Provincial coins of that city.
