Nola, Campania, Italy, c. 400 - 385 B.C.
|Italy|, |Nola,| |Campania,| |Italy,| |c.| |400| |-| |385| |B.C.|, Nola was an important city fifteen miles NE of Neapolis. A large number of Greek vases were made there with a shiny black glaze on pale yellow clay, and decorated with skillfully drawn red figures. The early coins show the influence of Neapolis and some obverse dies were shared with Neapolis and with other neighboring cities. In 313 B.C., Nola was captured by Rome. Augustus died in Nola on 19 August 14 A.D. An amphitheater, a theater, a temple of Augustus, etc. existed in the 16th century, but were demolished for building material. The modern town occupies the site and hardly anything is visible now. Only a few tombs of the Roman period are preserved.
