Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt, Ptolemy II Philadelphos, 285 - 246 B.C.
|Ptolemaic| |Egypt|, |Ptolemaic| |Kingdom| |of| |Egypt,| |Ptolemy| |II| |Philadelphos,| |285| |-| |246| |B.C.|, After her husband Lysimachus was killed in 281 B.C., Arsinoe II married her half-brother Ptolemy Keraunos. When he immediately killed two of her sons, she fled to her full-brother Ptolemy II of Egypt. Ptolemy II repudiated his wife Arsinoe I to marry his sister (a pharaonic custom). The Greeks of Alexandria promptly nicknamed them Philadelphoi (brother-loving). Since Arsinoe II was the widow of Lysimachus, through the marriage, Ptolemy II gained her Aegean territories. She died sometime after July 270 B.C. After her death, Ptolemy II continued to refer to her on official documents, as well as supporting her coinage and cult. Establishing her worship as a Goddess was a clever move, because it also established his own worship as a god.
