Roman Republic, First Triumvirate, Quintus Cassius Longinus, 55 B.C.
|99-50| |B.C.|, |Roman| |Republic,| |First| |Triumvirate,| |Quintus| |Cassius| |Longinus,| |55| |B.C.|, The reverse honors the moneyer's ancestor, L. Cassius Longinus Ravill, who merited the curule chair as an ex-consul and specially appointed quaesitor for the retrial in 113 B.C. of three Vestal Virgins accused of unchastity. Two of them and the men involved were condemned and put to death. In 137 B.C., as a tribune of the plebs, L. Cassius Longinus Ravill had successfully proposed the Lex Cassia Tabellaria, which changed the Republic’s voting system to the secret ballot. In 127 B.C., he was consul. In 125 B.C., he was elected censor. As a judge he gained fame for asking "Cui bono?" ("Who benefits?"), establishing the need to determine motive as a core principle of criminal investigation.
