Byzantine Empire, Heraclius & Heraclius Constantine, 23 January 613 - 11 January 641 A.D.
In 622, Heraclius sailed from Constantinople with an expeditionary force (probably 50,000 men) and began his counter-offensive against the Sasanian Persian Empire. Victory would come in 628. The Byzantines regained all their lost territories, their captured soldiers, a war indemnity, and most importantly for them, the True Cross and other relics that were lost in Jerusalem in 614.SH70032.
