Byzantine Empire, Constans II and Constantine IV, 13 April 654 - 15 July 668 A.D.
In 161, Maximus the Confessor, a Christian monk, was recalled from exile in Thrace. He was tried, and sentenced to mutilation. His tongue and his right hand were cut off to prevent his further opposition to Monothelitism. Monothelitism is the view that Jesus Christ has two natures (human and divine) but only one will. This is contrary to Dyothelitism, the view that Jesus Christ has two wills corresponding to his two natures.SH70010.
