Emesa was famous for its Temple of the Sun, the center of worship for the Syrian sun god El-Gebal (or Elagabal), worshiped in the form of a conical black stone. In 187, Septimius Severus married Julia Domna, age 17, the youngest daughter of the high-priest Julius Bassianus and a Syrian princess from the Royal House of Emesa.RS68055.
