Russia, Elizabeth I, 6 December 1741 - 5 January 1762
|Russia|, |Russia,| |Elizabeth| |I,| |6| |December| |1741| |-| |5| |January| |1762|, At the age of thirty-three, this naturally indolent and self-indulgent woman, with little knowledge and no experience, found herself at the head of a great empire at one of the most critical periods of its existence. Fortunately for herself and for Russia, with all her shortcomings (documents often waited months for her signature), Elizabeth inherited some of her father's genius. What sometimes appeared as irresolution and procrastination, was often a wise delay of judgment. She led Russia during the War of Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War. She encouraged foundation of the University of Moscow and the Imperial Academy of Arts. The Winter Palace and the Smolny Cathedral are the chief monuments of her reign. Elizabeth is one of the most popular Russian monarchs due to her opposition to Prussian policies and her abstinence from executing a single person during her reign.
