Late Roman - Byzantine, Syria Palaestina, Pottery Oil Lamp, 4th - 7th Century A.D.

|, Similar style lamps were introduced in the 4th century, popularity peaked in the 5th century, but similar lamps were still in use until the 8th century. The referenced Anawati lamp is very similar to our lamp but has a clear Greek cross in the channel. The symbol on our lamp is not so clear. It may be a cross but may be a Greek letter Xi, a stylized branch or a geometric design. None of the other many lamp references held by forum include a very similar type.
AG63810. Anawati C303 (Greek cross in channel); 9.5 cm (3 3/4") long, very good, complete and intact, soot on nozzle, mold made, ovoid, sharp carination, conical handle at rear, large fill whole with raised double rim, the outer rim extended around the wick hole forming channel on nozzle, symbol (maybe a cross or the Greek letter Xi?) in channel near the wick hole, radiating ribs on shoulder around large fill hole from ridge to carination, ring base; rare; SOLD
