Islamic, Cupping Glass, 9th - 12th Century A.D.
|Glass| |Antiquities|, |Islamic,| |Cupping| |Glass,| |9th| |-| |12th| |Century| |A.D.|, From the collection of Alex G. Malloy, former dealer in antiquities for 40 years.

Spouted cups such as this are called in Persian today shakh-i hajamat ("the horn of the cupper"). They were used in medicine for bloodletting. The cup was placed on the skin and by sucking on the tube the physician would create a vacuum that would pull the blood to the surface. The cup would then be removed and a small incision made to allow the blood to flow.
