Focas, 23 November 602 - 5 October 610 A.D.

Focas became emperor through a military revolt in the winter of 602 A.D. He was an oppressive evil tyrant. His reign was a period of disaster with invasions in the East and West, persecution of the aristocracy and civil unrest. Focas restored recognizable portraiture to the coinage - An oddity considering his appearance is often described as grotesque.

Only regnal year 1 (with officina A or B) is known for this type. In the Dumbarton Oaks catalog, Grierson notes for this and other Phocas bronze coins of Cyzicus the officina letter is regularly out of alignment with the letters KYZ, which are centrally placed below the mark of value. This implies that the officina letter was added later. On our coin the officina letter is much smaller than the mintmark, cramped and weak. It appears to be an A, for the first officina.

This type never bears the name of Focas in any recognizable form. Hoard evidence proves they are from the early seventh century and Wroth attributes them to Focas. They may be irregular local issues or even Persian. -- Byzantine Coins and Their Values by David R. Sear
