The shape and composition is typical of very similar pieces that have appeared with some frequency in a Middle Kingdom context.

The Twenty-Sixth Dynasty, also known as the Saite Period, lasted from 672 BC to 525 BC.

Shu is the Egyptian god of air. As the air, Shu was considered to be cooling, and thus a calming influence and a pacifier.

An example in the Royal Ontario Museum (Hayes ROM 393) is so similar that they appear to be from the same workshop and possibly the same mold (though ROM 393 is quite worn making it impossible to be certain). Hayes notes examples of this type are found in both Fayoum and Alexandria.

The manuals are quick identification guides as well as starting points for more extensive research. For each period, ceramic types are illustrated with a line drawing, accompanied by a description that includes information on the pot's material, manufacturing techniques, surface treatment, and shape.
