Marc Antony, Octavian and Lepidus, Triumvirs, 26 November 43 - 36 B.C.
Click for a larger photo RPC notes uncertainty regarding the reverse legend of this type. Apparently, none are fully and clearly legible. There is some question regarding the final Z. They note it may be X. On our example however, it seems clearly to be Z.

The Second Triumvirate officially expired after two five year terms in 33 B.C., but Octavian unilaterally expelled Lepidus in 36 B.C. While this effectively ended the three-man Triumvirate, Octavian and Mark Antony continued to serve as "triumvirs" despite their number.

Judas' 30 Pieces of Silver, Jerusalem or Tyre Mint, 34 - 35 A.D.
Click for a larger photo Judas' 30 Pieces of Silver

Then one of the 12, called Judas Iscariot, went unto the chief priests, and said unto them, 'What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you?' And they covenanted with him for 30 pieces of silver. Matthew 26:14-15. Shekels of Tyre were the only currency accepted at the Jerusalem Temple and are the most likely coinage with which Judas was paid for the betrayal of Jesus.

After the coinage of Tyre was debased under Roman control, some experts believe Herod the Great began to strike Tyre shekels and half shekels in Jerusalem. These coins were of cruder fabric and style, but maintained the silver purity required to pay the temple tax. The Jerusalem shekels have the letters KP or KAP to the right of the eagle and dates range from PH (18/17 B.C.) to PKE (69/70 A.D.). The Greek letters KP or KAP are probably an abbreviation for KAICAP, Greek for Caesar.

Aulus Gabinius, Proconsul of Syria, 57 - 55 B.C., Nysa-Scythopolis (Beth-Shean), Decapolis
Click for a larger photo Aulus Gabinius, Proconsul of Syria, was prominent in the late Republic. As tribune, he obtained for Pompey his command against pirates. Following the Roman seizure of Ptolemaic Cyprus in 58 BC, the Ptolemaic economy was in shambles. A shortage of money drove up interest rates and created widespread unemployment. A mob drove Ptolemy XII from Alexandria. Ptolemy XII paid Gabinius 10,000 silver talents to invade Egypt and restore him to his throne. Cleopatra was 13 and may have met a young cavalry officer under Gabinius, Marcus Antonius. The only coin portraits of Gabinius are on these rare issues of Nysa-Scythopolis.
