Livia, Wife of Augustus and Mother of Tiberius

Livia was the wife of Augustus, and maintained no small influence on the affairs of government. Living very simply and frugally, Livia set an example of Roman virtue which made her quite popular with the people of Rome. The malicious stories about her are products of later historians. She died in 29A.D. during the reign of her son Tiberius.

Click for a larger photo The portrait of this coin has been traditionally described as depicting Livia, based on Cohen's catalog. Even if as early as 1880 A. Colson was proposing that the portrait is actually Livilla, Drusus' wife, it was not in time for Cohen to consider it.

The portrait of Pietas alone is paired with the reverse naming Drusus. Livilla was believed to have shown piety over the sickness and death of her husband, Drusus. (Later it would be shown that she had poisoned him).
