Two undefined late trachy. Michael VIII ?
« on: December 16, 2014, 04:42:47 pm »
Greetings to all fans of Byzantium coins!
In December, two different vendors were sold coins of the same type:
The first coin as an unknown silver? trachy 24mm / 1,55gr for $84.
The second coin as trachy of MICHAEL VIII & ANDRONICUS II 21.5 mm / 2.2gr for $227.50.
I have not found such coins in the catalogs, but I think that this coin MICHAEL VIII.
Closest to him a coin, it seemed to me it is SB 2299.

Has anyone seen such a coin before? Please tell me the reference.

It's the empty throne type of Michael VIII - in silver it's S.2251, PCPC 13, DOC V 37 (the last says labarum instead of star on shaft), in bronze it's S.2272, PCPC 33, DOC V 82.

Actually, what I have is a simple database with all the post 1092 (Alexius I) bronze types listed with separate fields for obverse and reverse character type/symbol, basic clothing, what the characters hold etc.
Then it's just a matter of searching on the key features. Anyone can do it.

Perhaps this will make everyone, but how much time to spend on it :)
How old are you required to do?
How do you take the description of the coins?
And I wonder about the words you searched for this coin?

It takes some time to put it together, covering the period of the trachies and tets.
I use terms like Emp. stdg, Co-emp. stdg, Arch. h/l, Chr. enth, B. Mil. St, Pat. Cr, Lab. sc/orb and so on. You have to be consistent with the terms for the sorts and searches to work properly.
I didn't recognise this coin immediately (the obverse is unclear) but all I had to do was search for "Star on sh." types - there aren't many of them.

Thank you for sharing your secrets. I will try to use them in their designs.
I looked at the description PCPC 13: "star on a long shaft"
Search in one sentence would be failed, separate search words will give the desired result.
OK, I'll show some more obscure coins, you may be able to help.
