Umayyad quarter dinar?
« on: December 16, 2014, 12:55:00 pm »
Hello!

I can't find this coin in any catalogue.

The weight and size (0.91 g and 15 mm) are more or less the same of a quarter dinar.

The legends say that the coin was minted in Wasit in year 103 AH (~721 AD) and that it's a dirham.

I think it can be a coin minted by a tribe, or something like that, taking the legends from an Umayyad dirham.

Thanks.

Hello Allain I ,

I am not an expert in this type of Islamic coins but I can help you with this :

The Kuffi letters and writing are a little  ' funny '

Like :

1- bi Wasit in Kuffic ( in Wasit )  the “S” has 3 vertical lines . as in   بو ا سط

In your coin 4 lines which is wrong .

2 – the word Year or   Sanat  is also wrong  in your coin. the T   the last letter in the word Year or sanat is wrong.

3- Allah alone   ( Allah Wahdaho ) also is wrong .

And other language and grammar mistakes.

Welcome to FORVM ,

Sam

PS ; here is an example of the Arabic letters type used in that time .
You may like to compare Wasit and the other things I told you about.

Added* :  By the way the tribes language is very high and one seldom finds mistakes
like these.

Thanks Sam,

That's interesting. As I suspected, it is clear now that it is not an official emission but an imitative coin and done by someone without much knowledge about writing in this alphabet.

But, who is the minter? That's the question now.
