Coin or Weight? Xray Image
« on: December 07, 2014, 01:06:10 am »
This coin was dug up by a team in Doha, Qatar recently. Without x-ray nothing shows up, but with the x-ray you can see some markings. The weight is 3.98 grams. The team is debating whether this is a weight or a coin? To me it looks a bit like a Indian Princely State anonymous coin, and seems to light to be useful as a weight.

metal I presume? looks like a coin, not a weight, hard to make out the design, not familiar with Indian Princely state coinage though.

It is metal, there is some lead though, about 8%.

Even if there is nothing to see in a regular photograph, a sharp photograph might reveal details of flan shape and fabric that would at least allow a hypothesis.

So we figured it out. It was a madras presidency coin/East India Company from 1803.

Great--difficult identification to make in that condition.

Indeed, it was a great case of "How many archaeologists does it take to identify a coin" :)
