Horse head
« on: November 22, 2014, 01:12:21 am »
Never seen one like this before.  I almost wonder if it's a fantasy coin from more recently, but it does look very old.

Horse head on one side, down to the shoulder, cropped mane.  Other side is a palm tree, or crude bird or something?

Flan is pie-shaped, with bevel on horsey side.

5 grams, 18mm.

Acquired from seller in France.

You're right, that's Carthago Nova for sure.  I haven't been able to find Al.Bg 401 though.  Here's 398 and it's the horse all right.

Other coins show the palm tree with low hanging fruit.  But I haven't seen one that has horse and palm on opposite sides.  Is that what Al BG 401 is?

Voila.
Horse and palm on opposite sides.
See pic below.
Should be Alvarez Burgos but my book is now in storage.

I notice this coin type matches regular Carthage coins very closely.

How are they distinguished?
