I have
had this one for many years and I am trying to nail down the
attribution:
Ae 18mm; 5.54g
The letters I can make out on the
obverse look like:
AYTOK
Laureate
bust right,
eagle with wings spread beneath
The
reverse shows a
Centaur right,
arm drawn back behind
head (shooting and arrow?)
There is a
Vexillum behind him
I think it is from
Rhesaena,
Mesopotamia but I don't own The Coinage of
Rhesaena in
Mesopotamia (
Castelin)
nor is it available in the digital version. I think it is
Severus Alexander (poss.
Caracalla?). I have found a few examples of
Rhesaena coinage online but none that match and there seems to be some differences of opinion on who is actually on some of them. Most of the reverses I have found have a
Centaur advancing right holding a
Vexillum and they have a
head of
Tyche behind. I could not find one with the
Centaur and
Vexillum behind.
If anyone owns Castelins book or can
help I would appreciate it!
Thank you,
Robin
