Fake Antoninus Pius - casting marks
« on: November 26, 2020, 04:27:27 am »
Saw this pop up for Auction - Will hold off on naming etc until consensus.

I see casting bubbles and uneven wear. tooling on eyes!

Thoughts? NFSL?

hi Ben,

it looks like this ancient coin suffered some frost bite, you see this on some coins offered from Ukraine ect.
some times called horned silver i am not certain however

All the Best,
Eric

It looks ancient to me too, perhaps a fourree or just corroded.

thanks fellas

Did not bid on the item but just thought i looked strange to my inexperienced eyes.

The drop of what looks like molten on the face - is that a natural blemish?

Not cast. Very unlikely to be fake. Perhaps die damage. Perhaps a fourree with silver plate de-laminating due to underlying corrosion (as djmacdo wrote). Perhaps both. It would probably be easy to tell in hand.

Do not mix posts about coins with posts about sellers.  Except to say they are on the NFSL or not, there is no reason to mention the seller at all when asking about a coin's authenticity. I know you didn't name them, but you shouldn't have even suggested you might name them later.
