Romulus augustus Arelates
« on: November 24, 2020, 11:49:55 am »
Hello,

This time im working on Vth century, im really surprised to see so many fake coins and more, to see so high prices realyzed!

Today its not one but two coins. The first were sold 80 000 CHF and is a solidus of Arles.. This coin is mold. C of COMOB is linked to letter O wich is not complete... VICTOI (letter R not finished too) and this is just some examples.

For the coin illustrated in the RIC is with same obverse coin.. we can see the same default on letters and the blank is too much smooth in the field, brilliant and round. I dont have Lacam (see RIC X 3421 note) and Mazzini, the references are Lacam 23 and Mazzini 293 L.XXVII. Same for Ferrando, is it this coin that is referenced in those books?

It's uncertain as to the situation that prompted this issue, but there's nothing problematic about it at all. And I wouldn't say that there are a lot of fakes of fifth century coins around, at least in relation to to earlier periods. In terms of numbers it's mostly a few types for Theodosius II and Honorius. There were lots of contemporary Gallic imitations (which Majorian condemned), but not much else.

I saw a lot of AE fake coins for the Vth century.. and for gold im working on a study with some specialist and we exclude many coins. Thats why im now supsicious when something look strange. And here, it has a mold effect. There is too much letters linked together. Legend error can appear but if we add it to the linked letters i think its a few too much.
This is my opinion, maybe im wrong.. ill show it to Arelates specialist and come here with the answer.

I just got a reply from a specialist, he said i had reasons to be suspicious but the coin is genuine.

Therefore this post has no reason to be here, you can remove it.

Well, let me just say that three of my articles are listed in the bibliography of RIC 10, so I'm not exactly a novice at this.  ;D

::) My bad, didnt know. I add that i said that only because it is better to show a coin not to one but to many specialist. It happens that a part of them dont agree with the others. I never suggest that i didnt care your opinion, just that i wanted to see what everyone says.
