Unknown Byzantine Lead Seal
« on: October 27, 2014, 11:18:18 pm »
Can anyone help with this seal? Supposedly it originates in Eastern Turkey, and wondering if anyone can pinpoint if it belongs to a governor or local issue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Well, obverse you can see St George:  :Greek_Theta:  :Greek_Gamma:  :Greek_epsilon:  -  :Greek_omega_small:  :Greek_Rho:  :Greek_Gamma: :Greek_Iota:  :Greek_Omicron: C

For the other side, you should give me some further informations, f.e. whatever you can read. The Legend starts with + KE RO (KYPIE BOHTHEI) = Lord, help.... afterwards should come a name or a title or both.

Just list down the letters you can read on the seal, and maybe we can get a solution. Reading seals is not as easy as reading coin legends...

Best regards Posa

Maybe, just maybe:

Obverse:

O - A Γ [ΙΟC]
ΓΕ - ΩΡΓ[Ι]ΟC

Reverse:

+K[YΡΙ]Ε Β[ΟΗΘΕΙ] [Τ]Ο[Ν]
ΠΑΚΟ(Υ)Ρ[Ι]ΑΝ[ΟΝ]
[ΓΡΗΓΟΡΙΟΝ]
[...5..]ΡΑ
ΚΕ [.2.]
[...]

If I am correct, the seal belongs to Gregorios Pakourianos, born in Georgia around 1000 AD.
An important military official who took -amongst others- the title of Duke of Trapezunt.
At about 1081 he built a monastery in Batskovo-Bulgaria, which is still in operation.
