Antoninus Pius ID
« on: October 20, 2014, 09:51:11 am »
Got this Antoninus Pius today, the seller had it as RIC 1027, but that number is for Sestertius, my coin is 27mm & 11.14gr, so maybe a Dupondius? The legends are ANTONINVS AVG PIVS PP TR P XXII - VOTA SVSCEP DECENN III S-C. I have found a Dupondius RIC 1020 with the same legends, but the bust is Radiate on that, where mine is Laureate. Could anyone please help ID this for me.

In my RIC #1027 is an As. But your coin maybe 1028.

It looks like it may have "bronze disease." If so, act fast.
Search this site for how to cure it.

Thanks Pekka, was wondering if it could be a Mule? it defiantly has VOTA SVSCEP DECENN III on the rev.

Hi Pete, yes it does have a few spots of BD which I will treat and bake too.

As (head laureate right) with TR P XXII / VOTA SVSCEP DECENN III: Strack 1172, not in Cohen, specimens in Berlin, Vienna, Naples, and Munich.

Many thanks for the attribution Curtis Clay, would this be a scarcer type?

 Cheers

This abbreviation of the reverse legend seems to be scarce.

It would be interesting to know how many different reverse dies are attested by Strack's four asses and by the three similar dupondii that he cites.

Looks like I may have got lucky then. I'm just in the process of treating the few BD spots.

Would you have an idea when this was struck?

TR P XXII = 159 AD, more or less.
