Hello Martin, a very nice addition indeed, but while I am not sure of what you mean by Semi-Barbarous issue, I think that the coin is not fourree judging on the pictures, the high points are broken and what is beneath seems to be silver also, I think the coin is from a formal issue, but the date issue is confusing though Aradians are known to reverse the letters of dates for some reasoning, maybe the dies engraver was a foreigner or a local!!!

Hi Canaan,

What i mean by semi-barbarous issue is that this coin was made during a shortage of official coins, i will refrase myself and say unofficial because this coin is definately a fourreé and does have a bronze core. The Aradians were known to reverse their letters but only during the Greek period and i agree there is a possibilty that the die engraver was foreign. I also feel that the whole series needs scrutinizing and updating, there have been many new finds for Duyart series VI.

Thanks for your input.

Thanks a lot Martin for the clarifications, it is indeed very interesting coin, so at the Greek period there was a shortage in official coins as I understand and most likely reversing the letters of dates was likely due to that Greek influence. Very interesting indeed.

There is an extensive gap in respect to era dates of Duyrat 2005 serié III hemidrachm coinage, those with Phoenician numerals below the prow and those with greek letters representing the era date. The last known documented coins minted with Phoenician numerals were struck Aradian year 44 (216/215 B.C), they then reappeared Aradian year 130 (130/129 B.C) with Greek letters below prow.

The probability of finding unpublished coins between the aforementioned era dates was of course a possibility. The coin below advances our understanding of this type having been minted Aradian year 56 (204/203 B.C).

Phoenicia, Arados 204-203 B.C

AR 11.72mm (Thickness 1.95mm), weight 1.98g, die axis = 12h (0 degrees), Hemidrachm.

Obverse: Turreted head of Tyche right, border of dots.

Reverse: Prow of galley left with stem rising forward, AP monogram above, border of dots, Aradian era date 56.

My inferior photography does not show the silver through the crud as well as it does on the auction house image, so I have attached both.

Unpublished; New coin type of Arados

Phoenicia, Arados 400-380 B.C

Obverse: Figure of Marine Deity right (Ba´al Arwad), lower part of body fish-like with lines representing scalesfish (Dolphin) held in both hands, border of dots of flan.

Reverse: Galley right with eye on prow, row of shields along bulwark; winged seahorse (hippocamp) below prow and tortoise right with possibly Phoenician letter Tet adjacent; countermark above galley (perhaps Greek letter delta Δ), cable bordered incuse square.

The use of tortoise or turtles on coins of Phoenicia was uncommon during the Persian era and although this coin has unique iconography, there can be no doubts of the intended issuing city. The Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris have a similar coin but the iconography is slightly different, it depicts what appears to be a lion laying upon the galley with a turtle or tortoise to its right. The BNF coin seems to have the same countermark (delta Δ) above the galley but its partially hidden by a hole.

The Aradians were a seafaring folk so i would expect a turtle and not a tortoise to be depicted on their coinage, the reptiles anatomy suggests a swimming motion but regrettably this will be difficult to confirm.

I am curious and this may be a dumb question, but how are these two coins similar? What am I missing?

Thanks,
Virgil

Hi Virgil,

This is not a dumb question at all, i will try and explain the similarities.

Both specimens share the same iconography on the obverse e.g; Obverse: Figure of Marine Deity right (Ba´al Arwad), lower part of body fish-like, fish (Dolphin) held in both hands.

The similarities occur when comparing the reverse of my coin in conjunction with that of the BNF sample. Both share the same countermark, depiction of a turtle or tortoise, Phoenician letter Tet, Galley and winged seahorse (Hippocamp). So there appears to be numerous similarities between both types and therefore both should be considered has having a degree of uniformity in respects to the choice of iconography.
