Roman Republican AE As, Anonymous, reference needed
« on: October 15, 2014, 08:21:20 pm »
Hello,
I would like to know if there is a Crawford reference number (if available) for this Republican AE "Anonymous" As please.
There are many similar types to see via a Google Image search, with devices above the Galley Prow, but (maybe due to wear) I can not make out any device.

Obverse: laureate, bearded bust of Janus.  :Greek_Iota: above.
Reverse: Prow of Galley right.  :Greek_Iota: in right field. ROMA in exergue.
Weight: 15.30 g, Diameter: 28.5 x 30.8 x 3 mm, Die axis: 340°

Thank you

Pretty much impossible to tell. The style is early to mid second century BC. There may be a letter E visible above the prow at right; if so, reviewing possible moneyers, it might be OPEI Crawford 190/1, which is a common type. Or it might be something different. Sometimes one just can't tell. It's not an anonymous issue anyway, that's certain.
