Greetings from a new collector
« on: October 14, 2014, 05:01:25 am »
Hello everyone,

I've finally taken the plunge and joined the online forum. Having been buying ancient coins for over a decade, I guess it's about time!

Looking forward to contributing here.

Excited,
Jim

By the way, can anyone tell me how to edit my profile information? Maybe I'm just technically inept, but I clicked on 'my forum', then 'profile', but I can't see how to change age and location info... Any help appreciated!

Jim

Hi Jim, some functions are disabled until you've been active for a while, as spam protection. Signatures, profile pictures etc.
I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming you're a real person.  ;)

Thanks areich, good to know! I guess I'll just have to wait a while before announcing to the world through my profile that I'm actually a 99 year old woman living in Swaziland... or not!  ;D

Without getting dragged into a philosophical debate about the nature of reality and whether any of us are really 'real', or just figments of someone else's imagination, I can categorically state that I think I'm real!

That's a totally different question, you seem real enough. There are so many "hello, I'm new here" posts that are fake, particularly the ones not actually mentioning the topic of (ancient) coins. It might be that the threshold for being able to add profile information is so low that you can now do it. It's probably a certain (low) number of posts rather than the amount of time spent here.

as a brand new member already discussing philosophy, perhaps we're putting Descartes before the horse?   ;D

(There is a minor philosopher named DeHorst), a philosopher is someone who thinks that Descartes comes before DeHorst. ;D

Descartes walked into a bar, the bartender asked him if he would like anything to drink, Descartes said, "I think not! and promptly vanished out of existence!

Sorry, couldn't resist.  Welcome to the forum.

I laughed out loud at this one, even though I had heard it before many years ago!  :)

A neat and funny story, but an infamous fallacy, called "Denying the antecedent".

yes, but never let a little logic get in the way of a good joke (or maybe, its a bad joke, I'll let others judge).
Jim, do you have a particular area in which you are interested?
If I might ask, how do you characterize your collecting?  Are you interested in the aesthetics, the history, what?

Hi JBF,

I collect across the ancients spectrum, whatever happens to strike me as either particularly beautiful or which has an interesting background story. This means my collection is a bit eclectic, but I feel it is more interesting because of that.
