Caracalla, Nicaea
« on: September 28, 2014, 12:22:08 pm »
Hello everybody,

It's a coin of Nicaea with Caracalla. I don't find a reference with bust left.
Reverse : NIKA-I-EWN to left, above and right of legionary eagle between two standards
Obverse : Bust left of Caracalla ANTWNINOC

I would greatly appreciate if anyone could provide me a reference number to finish the attribution.

Diameter : 23 mm ; weight : 5.6 g.

Thank you in advance!

Not in Rec. Gén., SNG Aul. or Aul. Suppl, or Cologne University (Weiser). Where else have you looked?

Not in SNG Leypold or Lindgren I or III.

You should try Isegrim.

Ok, thanks!
I have tried Isegrim. I don't find bust left for this reverse.

ACSearch, CNG Research?

If not there, I'd say you are justified to call it a possibly unlisted bust variant of the same coin with bust right.

Ok, thanks for your answer.  ;)
Yes, I've already tried CNG, CGB, ac search, wildwinds : no results.

Should have searched forum gallery ;)

When I searched this several years ago, the conclusion was that this
is unlisted.  Your specimen is much better than mine.  I found
Mine in a cull lot.

But the legend on your coin seems to say MH - TP - OΠ - OΛ / ANKVPAC, so Ancyra in Galatia?

Of course you are correct...

That's why I should not do these things before morning shower...

Or maybe I should look into the concept of drinking coffee...

I think the obverses of Scaevolas coin and the coin in the link might be a die match.

The portrait looks the same, Letters O and C of ΑΝΤΩΝΙΝΟC are in the same postition. The ribbon of the laurel wreath looks identical.

If I´m right the coin might be a mule.

Nice observation, but why a mule? There's nothing unusual about the same obv. die being used with different rev. types.

Ok, mule is the wrong term, but it might be an explantion why this combination seems to be rare. If the obverse die was originally used with another reverse the number of coins produced with this combination might be small.

Thanks for your explanation shanxi!  You might be right. The obverse of my coin seems to be the same.
