Vitellius Sestertius - fake?
« on: September 10, 2014, 03:54:58 am »
Hello,

I think this Vitellius Sestertius from member Charles S is a cast fake, because of the unclearly Details
and also the letters look strange.

Example of Charles S:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-84481

Here is a kind of Padouan , offered by Künker:

http://www.sixbid.com/browse.html?auction=1522&category=31976&lot=1371004

Obverse and reverse are just the same, but the planchet is another.

What is your opinion?

Regards
kc

Both appear to be casts of previous struck Renaissance coins from the same dies.

Here an authentic  Vitellius. No dolphin and no tortoise. Like in Cohen.

Fake coin report(s) please.  I hope that when we spot a fake in a member's collection we notify them before starting a discussion.

I have uploaded the Künker coin into the fake reports but have left Charles S's coin for the moment to give him time to do it himself if he wishes.

Any idea what is the age of these casts?

They both look like modern casts to me, as the quality is far worse than the "real" Paduans.

Please never skip doing a fake coin report to give someone else time to do it.  Getting the report done is far more important than giving someone else an opportunity to do it.  Besides, I just can't imagine anyone being unhappy that someone else finished a report before they had time.

I think the reasoning was not to offend Charles.

Right, this is a little different than usual. As, I said in an earlier post, I hope he was informed before this thread was started. Still, any delay in submitting a report greatly increases the odds it will never get done.

OK Joe. That's it done now, could you please edit the link url to make it clickable. I forgot and only realised my mistake after it had been uploaded.

Thanks,

Alex

OK, now I understand the Problem. I have written a comment on Charles' coin a few days ago. Also I sent him 2-3 Messages but had not got an answer. To be sure that the coin really is a fake, I started this thread and wanted to hear other opinions.
