OK, how about a simpler question, what do you think it is?  A tesserae? A weight?

I have an xls list of several thousand tesserae, round, square, oblong, triangular etc,
and although I have several with the shell on the reverse and others with the head of
Silenus or similar on the obverse (e.g. Scholz 597-598, blank reverse), I didn't have
anything that combined the two.
(I also added a tessera page to wildwinds, with lead and AE tesserae, some seals etc).

The problem with tesserae and other lead tokens is / was that they were so simple to melt
down at home and make your own, e.g. as a personal IOU with your initials on it, as an "I owe you a meal" token, as entry tokens to family celebrations etc.
I still haven't added all the tesserae I have found, to the xls file because I had other work to do,
but I added this one to the list in any case.

Thanks Dane. I have not yet seen the WW tessera page. I will certainly take a look. Thanks for all you do to help collectors (and sometimes dealers too).

I am still a bit stuck on this one.

Any ideas on where or when it might have been struck?

I've never seen anything like it either.  Perhaps it should go in the seals section as it is frequented by seal collectors like Gert and Shaun

Lead was considered a magical metal.  If lead things don't fit into the categories of seals or weights they are often votive offerings or religious plaques.   Just a guess re this one.

The fabric and types of this piece are consistent with tesserae from Asia Minor, 2nd-3rd century BC.

There is very little in the way of references for Asia Minor tesserae. If its not in "Ephesian Tesserae," then its not going to be published anywhere. I'll check my books after the holiday.
