Ancient Greek coin. Bought on Crete, Greece.

Coin:

Weight: 8,05 g
Diameter: 19 mm

Obverse: Male head right
Reverse: Two people standing up facing each other and holding hands, male turning right, female turning left.

Can anyone tell me what coin it is?

Thank you

Regards

Lars Bloch

Modern cast fake I'm afraid. Along with the other modern cast which you asked about, these are typical of what is sold adjacent to ancient sites throughout the Mediterranean.

  • I love this forum!
It is a cast of an Egyptian tetradrachm of Gallienus, 253-268 A.D.  The real coin would have much sharper details and be bronze, not silver colored.

Thanks for the answers. I guess I have to study the coins more intense before I buy them next time.

Or buy from reliable sources (not Ebay, unless the seller is a real coin dealer known from outside Ebay), at least until you gain more experience. New collectors tend to buy fakes on Ebay, because they can't spot the difference and because the fakes are those coins that sell cheaply.
