Roman Civic Issue Help with ID please
« on: September 06, 2014, 04:29:29 pm »
Hi,

This was listed as Temnus, Aeolis, but I am having trouble finding a match for the size and reverse.

My coin:  Bronze 24.76 mm , 8.6 grams

Bust of senate right / Two figures facing one another.

Similar coins are listed for Ionia Smyrna, but I am lost.

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Castulo,

The reverse reminds me of a Pamphylia, Aspendos AE coin. But the obverse doesn't match any known obverse for that city.

Tralles, Lydia has a very similar type with the head of Boule on the obverse and a reverse of
Artemis standing right, holding torch, facing Demeter on the right, holding corn-ears and torch, altar between them.
It appears to be unlisted and is in the Mark Fox collection,
on the wildwinds Tralleis page under "Fox FAC 95299".
www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/lydia/tralleis/i.html.

The thing is, though, it might not be the Senate on your coin, it might be Demos, or - as above - Boule.

Boulé is female. This looks like a youthful Senate (Synkletos) head with Hygieia and Asklepios on the reverse. I am pretty sure I have seen this obverse die before but I can't remember which city it was. Lydia or Phrygia, most likely.
