Marcian coin not in RIC
« on: September 06, 2014, 03:09:04 pm »
Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone has any more information on this coin which appears to have been sold here on FORVM.

"Bronze AE4, RIC X -, SRCV 4327, Choice VF+, uncertain mint, weight 1.06g, maximum diameter 10.1mm, die axis 180o, 450 - 457 A.D.; obverse D N MARCINIANVS P F AVG, pearl diademed and cuirassed bust right; reverse monogram (monogram variety with pellet above S not listed in RIC) in wreath, cross above, uncertain mint mark in ex;"

I found a nearly identical one in similar or better condition with the "pellet" over the S in a recent lot purchase (pics later).  I'm just wondering if anyone has a better idea on if that type has been documented further and on how rare of a variant it really is.

Thanks

not the greatest pics but a clearly second example.  I haven't seen another one anywhere...
