Trajan Silver Medallion
« on: September 03, 2014, 03:49:22 pm »
Hi all,

This incredible silver "medallion" of Trajan is currently for sale. I've never seen its like and was wondering if any experts can confirm this is a known type?

Silbermedaillon (23,98g). 106 - 107 n. Chr. Mzst. Rom. Vs.: IMP CAES NERVAE TRAIANO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS V PP, Büste mit Lorbeerkranz und Aegis auf l. Schulter n.r. Rs.: ADVENTVS AVG / SPQR OPTIMO (sic!)

Certainly it would help if you could summarize the main points of the Italian discussion in English!

The reverse is different in the GM and BM medallions.  Due to the condition of the piece in the BM difficult to say if obverse from the same die.
Weight totally different . BM  20,71 GRS. GM  23,98.

Hi folks,

I noticed that medallion in GM's auction catalog too, which I received about a week ago from their American distributor. The estimate is very high. It's a beautiful piece.

There are numerous really nice Magna Graecia coins in that auction too. I know that there have been many warnings recently about buying Magna Graecia coins from Germany. I wonder if anyone suspects anything about them.

in this italian forum there are many peoples that suspect it is a fake... if you look at the pictures you will understand.

the medallion is very expansive but the "pedegree" is not adeguate.... I don't know what to say... even if I had alot of money I would not buy it... maybe it is not a fake...but i'n mot 100% sure
