Hinge/Chest Clasp?

This was hinged to something and appears to have functioned as a clasp.

When I first saw your picture of it it reminded me a bit of early Iron Age (Hallstatt era) jewelry.  The semi-circular bits hanging down.  But none of the rest of it made sense.

When you see the new photos it does look like a hinge part.  I struggled though to see how it could be attached to the chest as there are no holes.  But perhaps it was fixed with staples at the thin part by each of those semi-circular bits.

I have never seen a parallel though.

I think that it might be part of a medieval book clasp. There are many different designs and some look very similar to the "hinge" in question. The size would fit with a book clasp too.

Thank you again for help on this one. It could be a Medieval book clasp. But how would it have been attached to a book? With staples as Shawn had stated? Were the hinges sometimes glued to the books?
