Man faced bull requiring some love
« on: July 20, 2014, 11:58:40 pm »
Hi there,

Recently obtained something ive been looking for quite a while, a affordable Man Faced Bull.

However, my knowledge of these beasts is very lacking, and hopefully someone can tell me a little more about it.

AR Didrachm, 19.5mm diameter

I am sure it is Neapolis in Campania.
you might ask Molinari, or look up his threads on "mfb"
Molinari and Taras (Nick and Nico) are writing a book on man-faced bulls.
Molinari has websites on mfb in bronze, silver, and I think, electrum or gold.
btw,
Congratulations!

Congratulations!  That's a really nice coin.  Is there a lambda before the E on the obverse, and is there anything below the belly of the bull on the reverse?

Here are my silver pages, not nearly as complete as the bronze (yet!):

It might be like this, an unpublished(?) variety of Sambon 365:

Many thanks Molinari and JBF,

There isnt anything under the MFB's belly, and im 99% sure it doesn't have a lambda before the E, there is the very vaguest hint of something there, but Im pretty sure its just a surface mark.

In that case it is a variation of Sambon 365 like I linked to :)
