Elagabal Gadara Mint AE 24 for final ID
« on: July 19, 2014, 08:03:19 am »
Hi;
I need your help for final ID regarding this coin from Gadara Mint:
AE 24 mm-11,9g-6h
the bust looks like Elagabal.R/Within tetrastyle temple with pediment, Zeus wearing himation, seated l. on throne, holding in r. uncertain object, l. resting on scepter; at his feet, eagle. Dotted border.
 Spijkerman 76.?? ???
Thanks for your help
Regards
Nassif

Hi Nassif,

I think the portrait looks like Elagabalus too.

There is one on Wildwinds. The reference is Spijkerman 93. The reverse inscription looks a little different though.

Spijkerman 93 is a galley type for Gordian III, clearly we have a seated left Zeus, and the portrait is wrong for Gordian. It is Elagabalus, cf Spijkerman 76-79, can see in exergue ?ΔΑ and on left downward ΚCVΡ, in pediment ΑΠC

Hi folks,

According to Wildwinds and CNG, the reference is Spijkerman 93. Is there an error somewhere?

Hi Meepzorp,

I am away from my library for a couple of weeks, but you can look here to see some examples of Spijkerman 93, which is the Gordian III Galley type, along with Spijkerman 94.

thanks
