Unusual pattern of mules in the coinage of Gallus
« on: October 22, 2005, 03:51:48 am »
I have written an article about some odd characteristics I have seen in mules of the coinage of Trebonianus.  (For those of you still awake - you are a rare breed - thank you!)
Pretty much all of Gallus' coinage reverse types were normal to either Gallus or Volsuian.  They didn't both use the same exact everse types.  This is all well known.  What is new, is that what had seemed like accidental die pairings, creating mules (obverse of Gallus, reverse normal to Volusian, for example) may not be so hap-hazard at all.  I have found three distinct evidences that there is much more to the story.  Please read my article here:

I would most welcome your thoughts.
Best regards,
Richard

Of course I could have entitles this:  "A rare breed of Pax mules", but then all the serious readers would have ignored me, leaving the rest to fall asleep when they realized what it was really about.

Could the mules be unofficial productions?

Hi Robert,
In my article, I discuss mules with the Pax reverse, and because of their style and the frequency at which they are seen, I am very sure they are official and quite possibly intentions (I go into an expalnation in the article- link in my first post).
The fact that a high percentage of Gallus antoninianii mules (I am actually discussing obverses of Gallus mixed with reverses of Volusian) are of poor fabric may mean that the coins were unoficial, but the dies for these coins look to be official.
