Nero Contorniate opinions
« on: July 14, 2014, 05:33:30 pm »
Picked up this As of Nero the other day very cheaply online.  Pictures were blurry but from what I could tell it looked like a contorniate.  It arrived today and with it in hand it clearly looks like the rim is raised on both sides but it seems a bit clumsy.  I'd like to have the communities opinions.  Is this a contorniate or perhaps something else?  The attached photo I just quickly snapped.  Once I have some time I'll take a proper pic.

Thanks in advance!

It indeed looks like a "proto-contorniate", that is a 1st-3rd cent. sestertius or middle bronze with its edge hammered up in antiquity.

Thanks Curtis.  I always confuse protocontorniate with contorniate! Now that I have one I'm sure I'll remember the difference. :)

In hand it is much nicer than the picture suggests but because it is on the rough side it is difficult to photograph well.
