Bithynia, Kios - Mithras/Kantharos
« on: July 09, 2014, 11:37:21 pm »
Have this coin I have been trying to ID  Closest match is one I found at wildwinds listed as SNG von Aulock 7004.  However, this coin is 15mm and weighs 3.1 grams as opposed to the wildwinds coin at 11mm and 1.28 grams.  Anyone have a better reference?

I wonder why the head has been identified as Mithras and not Attis. If the dating of the coin is correct, it should be most likely the Anatolian Attis, in fact the spread of the cult of Mithra from East to the Greek world was later.

Pekka:  Thanks for the quick response!

That one wears a Phrygian cap...mine appears to have a laurel crown...

Thanks Taras.

This is my problem with this coin.  These match the wildwinds example and although types match as you say the weight difference seems to indicate another denomination.

Thanks Pekka.  Interesting in that the description says A on top but no mention of the K I  at the bottom...probably there just not noticeable.  At 2.5 I wonder if this is just a light example of what I have.  I would NOT expect there to be a third denomination...
