I'm currently in Dresden, with, among others, Michael Crawford, Andrew Burnett, Elio lo Cascio, Bernhard Woytek, Francois de Callatay, Michael Amandry and other notables, at a conference on Roman Republican coinage. This has kept me busy for several days. away from Forum, but in a different Forum! One picture below.

That's Professor Crawford himself!  Sounds like a great conference. Please let us know what cutting - edge issues were discussed.

die axis, either regulated or unregulated, as a measure of whether coin issues should be separated into separate sub issues, or whether two related issues might be joined. There were 5 papers on this subject

money usage and circulation, imitations, intrinsic and fiduciary bronzes etc. Several papers related

various more general presentations e.g. on types

changes in types from Roma etc to Apollo/Victory during Sullas time. What it meant

mechanisms to make large die studies feasible and implications for Punic war period

etc.

Most of the real transactions took place at lunch at receptions of course.

Thanks for this information and photo! Now Crawford has a face :) . I also found the event program ( http://www.uni-muenster.de/imperia/md/content/archaeologie/veranstaltungen/flyer_colloquium-dresden.pdf  ) . Very interesting!

Sounds great Andrew! So you know if the papers will (ever) be published?

Hi folks,

There was a photo there at one time. It was removed for some reason. Maybe Andrew didn't have permission from the people (Crawford, etc.) in it?

Not a question of permission (I don't need it) but Michael Crawford doesn't enjoy to be put on a different level from his fellow numismatists and classicists, such as you and I. Whilst he'd have been quite indifferent to being seen somewhere at the edge of a mixed group of classical students in a photo, he does not like to be placed on a celebrity pedestal. What actually caused me to remove the image is the fact that it attracted more than special attention. There were also some private requests to be allowed to share it on other websites. If you had all shrugged your shoulders and commented on the numismatic content of the background slide, then I guess I'd have left it up.
