Newbie cleaning advice

Hi,

I have a few very crusty roman coins found metal detecting. I have soaked them in distilled water, olive oil and cleaning them with a toothbrush.

On a different post I was criticised for using Bicarb of Soda on one of these.

The coin in the images has had the water, oil and toothbrush treatment. I know its not in great condition, nor as rare as hens teeth, but I want to get experience cleaning and Identifying them.

What cleaning method should I use next?

There is nothing to be gained by cleaning this coin, it is done.

That is acctualy a very good cleaning job,  the coin is now identifiable, the patina, ( or at least the toning ) of the coin remains intact, and as stated, there would be nothing to be gained from any further cleaning!!

Andy,

One of the great aspects of this hobby - in my opinion - is identifying the coins (or attributing them - identifying them and giving some catalogue numbers or other identifiers).  It is of course up to you but I would suggest you try to do it yourself - requesting hints as necessary on your first few.

You will find it both rewarding and educational.
