Constantius II coins struck by Vetranio ?
« on: May 31, 2014, 11:33:52 am »
Ave!

This coin is identified as struck by Vetranio in the name of Constantius II:

http://wildwinds.com/coins/ric/constantius_II/_siscia_RIC_viii_284.1.jpg
http://wildwinds.com/coins/ric/constantius_II/_siscia_RIC_viii_284.1.txt

And there are coins of the same type identified as struck by Constantius II:

http://wildwinds.com/coins/ric/constantius_II/_siscia_RIC_viii_301.jpg
http://wildwinds.com/coins/ric/constantius_II/_siscia_RIC_viii_301.txt

Can anybody explain me how to tell a coin struck by Constantuis II from the same coin of Vetranio in the name of Constantius ? I can't understand the difference.

For example I have this coin. Is it possible to identify it ? I can't even find examples of this type with :Greek_Delta: behind head.

There were 2 Concordia Militum issues with the delta behind bust, one from Siscia (RIC VIII 347A) and one from Sirmium ( RIC VIII 33 and 34 ). Sirmium 34 was for Gallus, so not your coin.
This type was originated by Vetranio, but continued for a short time after his surrender to Constantius. The Sirmium mint was not reopened until the summer of 351, several months after Vetranios surrender, So the delta issues would have been by Conatantius. Here is a pic of my Sirmium 33.

For more about the AE of Vetranio, see this site:

and a linked page illustrates associated AE of Constantius II and Gallus:

The delta relates to a series not introduced until after Vetranio's "retirement".

Oops. I just realized I should be more clear. The delta on the obverse dates to the post-Vetranio series, probably September 352.

As I can just barely make out a III in the right field of the reverse yours is clearly a Sirmium issue, RIC-33, LRBC-II-1592.

Here is a "cheat sheet" on the CONCORDIA MILITVM.

Siscia

Vetranio era: A obverse and A reverse; A* obverse and A reverse
Post-Vetranio: A obverse and III reverse

Sirmium

Vetranio era: mint closed
Post-Vetranio: A obverse and II reverse; :Greek_Delta: obverse and III reverse

Thessalonica

Vetranio era: A obverse and B reverse; A obverse and :Greek_Delta: reverse
Post-vetranio: A obverse and :Greek_Gamma: reverse

Yes. I don't have my RIC right now but it is the second issue struck under Vetranio. You can see A* on obverse and A on reverse. So mid-late 350.

By the way, a very nice example. Is it possible for you to post diameter and weight?

Some of these coins from the second issue under Vetranio are lighter and smaller in diameter than the first. Often you can see that as they used larger old die on smaller flan. But yours seems to fit the flan well.

Hi all,
For fun I'd thought I would add my Constantius II by Vetranio. Nice coins everyone, I find these very cool!

4.6 grams matches RIC's average of 4.65 grams for the second isue (the one with A :star: ). The size is on the upper end. A nice example.

Josh, that is a nice example of the other large denomination type struck by Ventranio at Siscia. You can see with the marks (A :star: ) that it is the same second issue as Skolot's but a slightly different sub-issue :dot: ASIS :dot: instead of :dot: ASIS :star: .
